For nearly 50 years, the federal government has maintained that James Earl Ray was the gunman who assassinated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but even Martin Luther King’s family believes that Ray was innocent, and was set up to take the fall. Within a few days of confessing, Ray claimed his innocence, arguing that that he had been set up. Coretta King suspected that the FBI, which had investigated the murder, was involved in it.
