“The Cleansing of the Sanctuary” is a reverent, soulful retelling of
📜 1 Maccabees 4:41–52,
the original historical account of how Hanukkah began — not with gifts or games, but with the restoration of the Temple.
After the battles were fought, Judas appointed warriors to guard the fortress while the priests — blameless, devoted, and lovers of the Law — went into the shattered sanctuary to remove every defiled stone.
The old altar was torn down, new stones were chosen “according to the Law,” and a new altar was built exactly as Moses commanded.
They restored the holy vessels, relit the lamps, replaced the incense altar, renewed the table, and spread out the veils again.
On the 25th day of Casleu, they rose early, offered sacrifices, and rededicated the house of Yah with worship, incense, and light.
This song walks through that sacred moment — the rebuilding, the cleansing, the return of the flame, and the renewal of holiness that gave birth to what we now call Hanukkah, the Feast of Dedication.
