In 1999 I read Song of Songs 1:5-6 and it spoke to the issue of colorism I saw in our community. Since then I have been studying the role of colorism not only in beauty but in prison sentencing and economics of African-American women.
👩🏾🏫 While in theology school I learned from the late Dr. Wyn Wright the first African-American woman to receive a doctorate in Biblical Hebrew from Harvard University that scripture translators choose to translate Song of Songs 1:5-6 as "I am Dark BUT Lovely" instead of "I am Dark AND Lovely" when presented with the Hebrew word Vav which can be translated AND or BUT. Why was this choice made and what are the consequences?
As a community organizer I worked on issues related to Mass incarceration and I learned that darker skin women and girls were penalized harsher by the criminal justice system.
